To create a safe communal outdoor space and improve the refuse and litter issues that houses and shops had encountered.
At the rear of the shops weeds were removed and the road surface regulated ready for crushed stone surfacing offering a clearer and safer access for the shop owners to their properties.
Waste land between the two rows of terraced houses was excavated, stone walls built and a gate to enclose waste bins and recycling station constructed. In addition steps were built by the side of the new bin store to improve access for pedestrians.
An area of existing unused grass was replaced with a small communal courtyard for the residents, this was especially beneficial to residents with small children as it gave them an area which was safe and secure for them to play outdoors. This was made accessible by the new staircase which was purpose built and installed along with troughs which have been planted with evergreen plants for all year interest and colour.

Renovation of the The View play area, Bankside Lane, Rawtenstall
This project comprised levelling the site, installing a revised drainage system, custom designed furniture and the construction of a ramp which was DDA compliant to provide access to the play area.
The new disability access was constructed sympathetically, incorporating a stone wall in keeping with the existing boundary walls.
After levelling was complete a tarmac base was laid ready for the resin bound coloured gravel surface, which was laid by hand to achieve the smooth curves required to fullfil the design specification.
To complete the project, flower beds were planted with appropriate robust sensory plants.
The View was officially opened by the Mayor of Rossendale on Friday 17th October 2008, much to the satisfaction of the young residents of Bankside Lane, who originally initiated the petition for the renovation works to be executed.
